The last post I wrote on creative range really did a number on me. I realized I’d been leaning too heavily on one side of the absurd spectrum, holding back from both myself and my audience the kind of work that emerges when we disrupt and sabotage what’s “normal” with quieter, more subdued, and sometimes darker tones.

As if the universe knew what I was up to, I got some encouraging validation. The metrics on my recent experiments had my head spinning. It was exhilarating, but also worrisome. I caught myself thinking, “Do I have to pigeonhole myself into one style or genre now just to chase impressions?” Typical feeling for when you think you’re doing something off-brand and in unknown territory. I was wrong.

But buried in all that virality and views was the real diamond: the feedback.

I try to be careful with comments. I don’t want to feed my ego, and I definitely don’t waste time on AI-haters. Still, most were overwhelmingly positive. What hit me hardest was reading what my work reminded people of — nostalgic commercials, directors, movies — and how it made them feel. That sent me down a rabbit hole of research, art history, and deeper study.

You don’t know what you don’t know, right?

Days later, I started seeing what they saw, and it gave me a much deeper appreciation for their insights and my own dedication to the craft. I’m still a shoot-from-the-hip artist at heart, but the more I learn, the better I create and the more depth consequently has.

So I’ve committed to exploring my creative range, and I’m listening.

Is there anything here you’ve really liked? Does it remind of you anything? Have apparel requests? Format or content suggestions? Or are you just enjoying the ride as it unfolds? Either way, I’d love to hear from you. Reply via email or dm.
